History of Arcadia in Phoenix/Scottsdale Arizona

The Arcadia neighborhood is located in the eastern part of Phoenix, Arizona, and is bounded by 44th Street to the west, 68th Street to the east, Indian School Road to the north, and Camelback Mountain to the south.

The Arcadia neighborhood was originally part of the Salt River Valley, which was inhabited by Native American tribes for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers. The first settlers in the area were farmers and ranchers who were drawn to the fertile land and abundant water supply provided by the Salt River.

In the early 1900s, many farmers began to plant orange, lemon, and grapefruit trees in what is now the Arcadia neighborhood. The area was named for the Arcadia Water Company, which was established in 1919 to provide irrigation water to local farms.

The history of Arcadia reflects the unique character and charm of the Phoenix-Scottsdale area.

While Arcadia was historically known for its citrus industry, the current state of the citrus industry in the neighborhood is not as prominent as it once was. Over the years, many of the citrus groves have been replaced with residential and commercial developments.

However, there are still some citrus trees and orchards in the area, and some residents have maintained backyard citrus trees. In fact, many of the homes in Arcadia were built on former citrus groves, and the neighborhood’s lush landscaping is a testament to the area’s agricultural heritage.

In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in urban farming and sustainable agriculture, and some residents have started to plant fruit trees, including citrus, in their yards. Some local farmers’ markets sell these citrus fruits.

While the citrus industry in Arcadia is not as prominent as it once was, the neighborhood’s history and agricultural heritage continue to be an important part of its identity.

In addition, there are several community gardens and urban farms in the area, where residents can grow their own food and learn about sustainable agriculture. One example is the Camelback Mountain Community Garden, which is located near Arcadia and offers plots for community members to grow their own vegetables and flowers.

Overall, there are many local organizations and groups in Arcadia and the greater Phoenix area that promote sustainable agriculture and urban farming, making it easy for residents to get involved and learn more about these important topics.

Arcadia contains well-kept homes on large lots; these homes command relatively high property values (as the neighborhood is adjacent to the upscale suburbs of Paradise Valley, the Biltmore area, Scottsdale and north Phoenix).

Built on former citrus groves, Arcadia is known for well-irrigated, mature landscaping. Several yards prominently feature orange, lemon and grapefruit trees as reminders of the area’s past; the area used to be occupied by citrus farmers from 1919 to the mid-1950s. By the 1950s, Phoenix grew to grew to reach Arcadia. Most of Arcadia is in Phoenix. The area east of 64th St is in Scottsdale.

In the 1920s, the area began to be developed as a residential neighborhood. Many of the first homes were built in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, which was popular in Arizona at the time. The neighborhood was designed to take advantage of the area’s natural beauty, with many homes featuring large windows and outdoor spaces that provided stunning views of Camelback Mountain.

Throughout the mid-20th century, Arcadia continued to grow and develop. Many new homes were built, and the area became a popular destination for families and retirees. In the 1950s and 1960s, ranch-style homes became popular in the area, and many of the older Spanish Colonial Revival homes were renovated to reflect this style.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Arcadia underwent a period of revitalization. Many of the older homes were restored, and new businesses and restaurants began to open in the area. Today, Arcadia is known for its beautiful homes, lush landscaping, and vibrant food and drink scene.
