The history of Desert Ridge dates back to the early 1900s when the area was primarily used for farming and ranching. However, as Phoenix grew and expanded, the land became more valuable for development. The land that is now Desert Ridge was originally part of the Tonto National Forest. In the early 1990s, the ASU Foundation and Brookfield Communities saw an opportunity to develop a large-scale master-planned community in the area. They acquired the land and began working on a plan that would include residential neighborhoods, commercial developments, and recreational amenities. Construction began in 1996, and the first homes were completed in 1998.
The community also includes several commercial developments, including the Desert Ridge Marketplace, a 1.2 million square foot shopping center that opened in 2001. It features over 100 retailers, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Adding to its repertoire, Desert Ridge saw the development of High Desert Park in 2002, a place for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy the natural beauty of the desert landscape. Since then, the community has continued to grow and develop. The Desert Ridge community covers over 5,700 acres. Today, Desert Ridge is home to over 50,000 residents and features a mix of single-family homes, townhomes, and apartments.
The first phase of the Desert Ridge development began in 1997 and included the construction of the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, which opened in 2002. The resort features 950 guest rooms, five swimming pools, a 28,000-square-foot spa, and two championship golf courses. Nestled in Phoenix, Arizona, our resort boasts one of the finest pickleball facilities in the region. With a total of 17 courts, a certified instructor, and a fully stocked pro shop, this facility is a haven for pickleball enthusiasts. In addition, our resort offers a breathtaking pool experience with five pools, a lazy river, and luxurious cabana cottages and pool suites. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind in style.
Desert Ridge is conveniently located near several major highways, making it easy to access other parts of the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is also located near several recreational areas, including the Tonto National Forest and Lake Pleasant Regional Park. It is also home to several parks, including the Desert Ridge Community Park, which features a skate park, basketball courts, and a playground. The community is home to the 2,000-acre Phoenix Sonoran Preserve, which offers over 36 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails. It also boasts of the Mayo Clinic Hospital, providing world-class healthcare services. With the City North complex, it has further expanded its commercial footprint, offering a mix of upscale retail, dining, and office spaces.
