Back in 1888, a gentleman by the name of Winfield Scott, who was a U.S. Army Chaplain, surveyed the Salt River Valley with his wife Helen, and with great excitement, decided it was time to pursue farming. Winfield purchased 640 acres of land for $3.50 an acre.
Soon bearing his name, this plot of land was very close to where downtown Scottsdale is today. Scenery, warm climate and irrigation was the biggest influence.
His decision to start this adventure was the inspired force to attract more investors into the development of this new city. While the main attraction was farming, potential good health also brought settlers.
1894 – Originally named “Orangedale” due to the citrus groves that were planted, was then named “Scottsdale.”
1896 – Public School system enacted.
1897 – First Post Office opened, inside the General Store
Early 1900’s – Scottsdale nicknamed “The West’s Most Western Town” because of the development of the Ranching Business
1908 – Granite Reef Dam Constructed
1911 – Roosevelt Dam Constructed
1909 – Ingleside Inn Resort is built
1922 – Jokake Inn Hotel is built
In 1937, highly acclaimed architect, Frank Lloyd Wright and his wife acquired 600 acres of desert land at the base of the McDowell Mountains. He built his winter home at Taliesen West, where he also had his southwest headquarters for his architectural business.
In 1942, was the opening of Thunderbird II Airfield. Flight training for over 5,000 pilot cadets took place before the end of World War 2. In addition, a German POW camp was set up in Scottsdale.
In 1947, the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce was formed.
In 1950, Motorola opened a plant near Scottsdale’s western border, signaling the beginning of an advanced technology industry that has continued to grow.
In 1951, the town incorporated. There were 2,000 people living in a square mile radius.
Scottsdale quickly grew during the 1950s, and an area of almost five square miles, had a population of more than 10,000 by 1960.
Scottsdale’s population increased to almost 67,000 by the end of the 1960’s, and the land area expanded to over 60 square miles.
For twenty years, Scottsdale was pushing north through the Sonoran Desert with higher altitudes. In 1980, the population had 88,000 people covering almost 89 square miles.
By 1990, it had reached more than 130,000 in population and expanded to roughly its present size – about 185 square miles. By 2000, the city was home to more than 202,000.
Scottsdale’s climate is dry. Winters are mild to warm and summers are extremely hot. The lowest temperature ever recorded is 16.0 °F, on January 7, 1913, and the highest was 122°F on June 26, 1990.
Scottsdale along with Atlanta are fourth in the nation for the most AAA Five Diamond Resorts and Hotels, trailing only Las Vegas, Chicago, and New York City.
Scottsdale is a highly acclaimed destination and brings in 6 million visitors a year. Retirees from the northeast, midwest, and Canada visit short and long term. Referred to as ‘snowbirds‘. If they come regularly, they end up buying winter homes.
Scottsdale galleries and studios are well known for their Native American and Western theme. Scottsdale with over 125 of them, has the highest per capita in the nation.
Scottsdale is a popular golf and resort destination. With over 55 courses, from desert golf to rolling fairways, and traditional courses, it is also home to the most attended golf tournament in the world, the Phoenix Open at the Tournament Players Club. In recent years, it is more of an event then a golf tournament, with over 500,000 people over four days.
Scottsdale is 31 miles long and 11 miles wide, filled with beautiful parks, art galleries, resorts, and shopping malls.
